Neil Young: Our 1993 Artist of the Year

Greil Marcus | January 1994 | Spin

In June 1993 Young headed out on a European tour, backed by 1960s R&B legends Booker T. and the M.G.s. This was Young’s first of many jaunts on the lucrative summer festival circuit, sharing stages in 1993 with the likes of Metallica, the Black Crowes, and Pearl Jam. He was also joined by the legendary Stax house band on a late summer US tour.

Chronologically halfway between the earliest and latest pieces in this collection, this piece by the dean of American rock journalists, Greil Marcus, serves as a critical overview of the first part of the artist’s career, an overview that contextualizes Young’s renewed relevance in the early 1990s. Young spends time discussing the failure of Landing on Water in the context of the Geffen albums, “coming out of an egg” with Freedom, and the revelation that the inconceivable complexity of pure sound that’s he’s chasing is God. —Ed.
